Xindice 1.1 & XMLObject

I've been reading through the archives and noticed the posting on 2002-09-06 Tom Bradford stating XMLObject has been removed from Xindice as of 1.1.  Could I ask why it was removed and if there are any similar solutions available?  Thanks!
