log level

Any ideas on how to change the log level from DEBUG to say ERROR in 
xindice-cvs (or beta versions).  I have xindice running in Tomcat.  I 
know I can set
-Dorg.apache.commons.logging.simplelog.defaultlog=%LOGLEVEL%
in Tomcat but I fear this may interfere with Tomcat's internals too.

Is there any way to set it in system.xml?
