Any of the latest versions - 2.1.3 and later have plenty.
Blocks are enabled by default. So just install and build Cocoon, start it with cocoon servlet, then go to http://localhost:8888/ and follow the links to the samples for the XMLDB block.

In fact, Xindice is already in Cocoon, enable the XMLDB block, and look at the samples.
