You can place files wherever you want, as long as they are accessible through file system, xindice will work. So, you can use NFS, or whatever, with no problem.

Xindice server requires exclusive access to the Xindice data files. If you to start several Xindice servers with the same data files, your files will get corrupted. Hope this somewhat answers your question.
