One data point...

Xerces, Xalan compatibility with the current version. Since the same
spec level compliance is present, that is Xerces and Xalan in their
respective XML areas are backward compatible shouldn't the newer
versions work or have there been spefic problems uncovered.

There is no POM file for Xindice yet.

Xindice compiles/runs under Java 5. I haven't tried Java 6. If you
have the chance to try Xindice with Java 6, please feel free to report
any problems with it.

The latest version (not yet released) uses Xalan 2.7.0 and Xerces 2.9.0.
