I don't know about freeware AV ( Anti Virus ) solutions anyway.
Look, to have an AV engine is not a problem itself.
The problem is to have DAT updates promply installed on Your system, coz
whitout this YourAV is useless.
So it's quite difficult to have a serious AV solution "free" of costs.

My work in McAfee is to develop an AV network appliance ( PIII 1GHz 2 way SMP
256Mb RAM 2 netcards ) for SMTP AV and content filtering scanning. You plug it
into Your network, You configure it through Your browser and You've no other
task to do other than watch at Your mails cleared by viruses. The appliance
automatically call home for DAT and software updates, so You're sure to be
always up to date. This is definitely not free but I can ensure You that it's a
very professional solution. More, one of these gizmos could keep on a traffic
of over 220000 msgs / hour :)
