I've also had some troubles with sendmail but on my server it was a
security problem. Sendmail was runned by Apache (which is not running
as root) and therefore sendmail had not enough access in the spool dir.
Therefore I changed the rights so sendmail has enough rights when
Apache calls it. Do you run sendmail as root or as normal user ?
