Thanks for the warmhearted guys to give me suggestions about how to configure xmail on Redhat 7.1 . In my /etc/xinet.d directory, there is only a file named finger which is relavant to email service. No pop, smtp or imap. And finger is already disabled. So I configured xmail following the directions on readme.txt. Now xmail runs, but I can not access it from windows in another PC with SMTP or POP3. Here is the symptom:
I have two PCs. A is running Redhat 7.1. B is running Windows2k. Both have an Xmail running. Xmail in A has a domain called "proxyserver". Xmail in B has a domain called "proxyclient". 1. XMail runs on A normally. I can see it with pstree and netstat --tcp -n -a -p: [root@localhost /root]# netstat -tcp -n-a -p Active Internet Connections (servers and established) Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State PID/Program name tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:32768 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 608/rpc.statd tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:6017 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 924/XMail tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:110 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 924/XMail tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:79 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 924/XMail tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:111 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 593/portmap tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:6000 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 963/X tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:22 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 796/sshd tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:25 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 924/XMail 2. I can ping A from B. And I can use CtrlClnt to configure xmail on A both from A itself and B. 3. I can use Pine to send email from rui@proxyserver through xmail running on A(I set the default smtp gateway to the IP of B) to rui@proxyclient, but I can not send email in the reversed direction, say, from rui@proxyclient to rui@proxyserver. 4. I also can not use outlook on B to access the account rui@proxyserver , outlook shows the server can not be connected. Anybody has opinion on it? Is there a possibility that my network configuration is not propert? Great thanks !
