This is just a quick guess and I may be wrong, but by default, xmail comes as an open relay with "0.0.0.0" [tab] "subnet" in smtprelay.tab. This is open. IF you removed that line from the file, I think xmail will close the relay. I would suggest putting the IP of your 'handing off' mail server in smtprelay.tab and also 127.0.0.1. Again, this is just a guess, but I think you need entries in smtprelay.tab in order to relay.
