No: An ISP can forward messages trough SMTP to your mailserver MTA-MTA (f.i.
a seperate mailserver for a subdomain)
Yes: ISP stores and forward messages; you are logging in onto a pop3-mailbox
and fetch the mail there. MTA-MUA (typical config)

What I will say might sound (and could be) silly, but I read somewhere that
it will be difficult for an ISPs' mailserver (and
MTA) to talk to an external MTA but only to MUAs (Mail User Agents). I am
just trying to eliminate the possibilities.
