How did you setup the user account? If you didn't use the xmail control protocol then I suggest you get one of the xmail administration programs. I like xmail admin http://www.webifi.com/xmail/ easy to use and does the job without having to install anything on the server.
Also make sure you have created all directories as described in the docs http://www.xmailserver.org/Readme.html#mailroot%20structure Some of them are empty and are not created automatically.
