Hello all, As I promised (threatened!) I am beginning to update the former Linux and XMail HOWTO. Since nobody volunteered to help me and since I'm not an XMail expert, I'm asking list members for help. If you could take a look at my draft for chapter 2 checking for accuracy, spelling, and stoooopid mistakes I would appreciate it. Keep in mind that this is a text version and the html version will be formatted to improve readability. Let me know what you think:
2. Obtain and Unpack the Package Download the package from: http://www.xmailserver.org. The easiest way to install XMail if you are using a standard Redhat or SuSE distro is with the RPM package. There is also a tarball and a SRPM available if you don't have an RPM based distro, if you have problems with the RPM binary, or if you just prefer to build your own. To install the RPM version, su to root and cd to the directory containing the RPM file. Make sure the file has the executable flag set then unpack it: rpm -ivh xmail-1.17-1.i368.rpm This will install a startup script in /etc/rc.d/init.d, replace the original /usr/sbin/sendmail with an XMail script, and create the /var/MailRoot and /var/MailRoot.sample directories. To install the SRPM, su to root and cd to the directory containing the SRPM file. Make sure the file has the executable flag set and then unpack it: rpm -ivh xmail-1.17-1.src.rpm This will copy a tar.gz file to the /usr/src/packages/SOURCES directory. You can then follow the tar.gz instructions. To install the tarball, cd to the directory containing the tar.gz file and unpack it: tar -vxzf xmail-1.17.tar.gz The Readme file is also the XMail manual so I recommend you get familiar with it now. The RPM package installs the Readme in /var/MailRoot/docs/ and tar.gz users will find it in the xmail-1.17/docs directory. You will want to refer to this file during the configuration process so you need to have a working knowledge of where to find things. - Back To Top - Thanks.
