If you successfully connected to the machine using telnet from the mail server, then the mail server should be able to do the same. You said that you have port 53 blocked. You also said that you are not using SmartDNS (if I recall correctly). So, how are you doing DNS lookups?
I could be wrong here, but what I'm about to say matches my own experience - Xmail uses external DNS (such as the root DNS servers) to find MX records for remote systems. So, for example, if Xmail wanted to find the MX record for uol.com.br, it might: 1) Do a query to the ROOT servers for the authoritative DNS server that serves uol.com.br 2) Do a query to the authoritative DNS server for uol.com.br's MX record Setting up the SmartDns option in server.tab causes Xmail to use a specific (set of) DNS server(s) to perform these queries. So, if you have no access to port 53 (UDP and TCP) from the mail server, you need to establish the SmartDns option in server.tab. And if I'm wrong here, somebody beat me with a cluestick, OK?
