Yes, a filter would be the right way. Examples can be found here: http://www.hmdc.de/technical/xmail-filters.html Especially the perl function splitfile() is of interest.
Modifying headers and optionally body text is one of the next filters I already planned to do (Subject rewriting because of some RE:RE:RE:RE: stuff, eg.) Attention: I am moving my domain to another provider this week. hmdc.de is a temporary domain mirroring my "official" site for perhaps a limited time. My "official" pages reside at http://www.hagen-mayer.de/technical/xmail-filters.html. At the moment, they are still working. After migration was completed, they will be fully back again.
