Spyros,
As far as I know these are kind of separate questions (unless you
check your mail as local unix mail on your Linux box).

For most people who will be checking email through POP, running
Drake's filter is the only way to get SpamAssassin to work with
XMail, unless you want to write your own filter to do the same thing
(and Drake's filter is so good it doesn't make sense, really).

The only other way to have SA run would be to have a script feed
messages being delivered to a local unix mail folder to spamc. Even
if you were receiving your email as local unix mail, the easiest way
to have the message scanned would be to use Drake's script.

Teaching SA is independent of how you choose to have messages
scanned. There is documentation about this online (
http://spamassassin.org/doc/sa-learn.html . Teaching SA only lets it
become a better predictor of what is an isn't spam in you inbox (and
this uses Bayseian filtering, which is becoming less and less
reliable as spammers become more crafty). So you would scan in a
whole bunch of spam (letting SA know it is spam for learning
purposes) and then do the same for ham. But this is separate from
actually having your mail filtered by SA as it is incoming.

I guess the short answer is -- no matter what, use Drake's script.
Then, in addition, if you want, scan in a whole bunch of spam and ham
to teach the bayseian filter.

Let me know if you have any questions,

Toby
