Do you have any filters running on the server? This seems to be the cause of problems almost all the time. How many connections is "excessive?" I've seen it handle a sustained load of 2 or 3 a second [Note: Kids always remember to setup your smtprelay.tab file! *sigh*]. And to answer your question about XMail's defaults:
