I'm embarrassed to admit that it was dumb user error on my part - I was not using XMail's sendmail, which is named sendmail.xmail (and sendmail.xmail.sh) but rather some other version! This also explains why I didn't have any lmail-* log files, (only smail-*). Cheers.
