I tried enabling SSLAllowSelfSigned and I still get the error. I'm assuming
this isn't a big deal? If it is, how should I fix it?

What is the consensus about enabling SSLAllowSelfSigned for email traffic
for use on a public server?

Thanks.

Noooo, that's really bad for your server! :)
It means that the remote peer has a self-signed cert. Or that the root of
his chain in not contained in your CA cert list.
