My Xmail is running on OpenWrt, where the log files are stored in /opt/var/MailRoot/logs. The auth log information is stored in files 'smtp-*' or 'pop3-*' accordingly, but these files are rotated in every day which makes it hard to analyze on-the-fly. I tried to set the rotation interval to zero, but it does not work. It would be useful to direct the log out to a pipe, or to switch off the rotation. Is it possible? The best would be to use the file /var/log/auth.log as you mentioned (without rotation) with only the auth info.
