If I understand correctly I can't completely whitelist a certain smtp IP
range from all the filters/checks, I will have to create a whitelist within
my filters? This is not a problem, I just want to make sure.

Yes, it is possible. From the manual:

WhiteList

    If set to 1, all peer IP based checks will be skipped.
                 ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
