Hello,

I happen to try to make XMail work with dovecot these days.

I don't know if Dovecot is of any interested to you.
However, my choice was this because I've been using XMail for nine years now and
I am pretty happy with it and don't want to drop it under any circumstances..

So here goes what little I know so far about XMail and Dovecot.

Yes, XMail works like a charm with dovecot (that's what people in this list
keep telling
me) and I tried it myself and it seems that it interfaces fully with XMail.

Two key-steps (AFAIK) :

1. cd to /etc/dovecot.conf
copy the original dovecot.conf file (cp dovecot-example.conf dovecot.conf)
edit dovecot.conf and find the line that says :

#mail_location =

uncomment the starting hash (#) or copy it and uncomment the copied line, just
to keep the original untouched)
and you change it to the following :

mail_location =
maildir:/var/MailRoot/domains/%d/%n/Maildir

"%d" is for domain names (just the domain names: like example.com)
and "%n" is for mail usernames. So from what you see, you keep the
XMail structure. And _this_ is what I love about Dovecot at the moment.

2. Not even close, you will have to make XMail run with a user named dovecot.
User dovecot should be so "close" to the root user priviledges, as if it's not
that
powerfull a user, either Dovecot _or_ XMail will exit and stop spawning/working.

There's other stuff too. But this should keep you going for a start.

There are other "dovecot.conf" options that need to be closely monitored and
studied.
I am not there yet, because Christmas fell on the way. However, I hope that by
the
end of January, I will have a working XMail/Dovecot installation.

HTH,

spyros
