This sounds like exactly what I'm seeing...
Sorry for having to starting this thread. But it looks like I'm not alone after
all....
Is there anything I can do to help debug the problem?

using -scale 1 I get a screen of garbled junk

this never happened before there is some xmame bug here somewhere.
