ROMPATH environment varible removed?

I tried changing my rompath by setting the ROMPATH environment variable,
but xmame -showconfig told me that it didn't work.  Was this removed for
security reasons? or was it just an oversite, because it's still mentioned
in xmame -help.  Being able to override the rompath with an environment
variable is sometimes eaiser then editing the xmamerc file.
