I still have one oddity though, which appears to affect only xmame's sound. I had this before, too, and it hasn't gone away now that I've got this esound working and apparently solved my other problems. First, I have discovered that the volume control in gmix 3.0 (Gnome audio mixer) doesn't work exactly the way that you would think with this motherboard/soundchip. The "Vol" setting does nothing at all. Top, bottom, in the middle, "Vol" has absolutely no effect. To turn the sound volume up and down you have to use the "Pcm" and "Pcm2" slider, which "control the volume of the 'wave' files" according to the gmix documentation. "Pcm" and "Pcm2" appear to work in tandem. If I have either one set too low the volume of the soundcard is too low and vice versa. Anyway, this has no effect on anything much (after getting the volume set initially, that is) except xmame. When I load an xmame game, the volume seems to default to FULL BLAST! To get the volume down to a reasonable level, I have to load gmix. After loading it, the volume goes to where it should be immediately, and I can then exit gmix and play the game. I have to do this over again for the next xmame game that I load. And so on. It only affects xmame, as far as I am aware, though I really don't use too many sound-related applications. Leaving gmix running doesn't solve the problem as xmame will come up at FULL BLAST! even with gmix running in the background. Exit gmix, reload, and the volume is fixed.
