It's main purpose IMHO is to prevent sources to get hidden by commercial
compagnies who want to get-rich-quick by using open source but not
allowing any feedback/flowback from there code back to the community.
In case of open-but-not-free-sources like mame it can be a slight burden

Me personal tactic in such case is to ask the author of that piece of
code if he is willing to dual license. If he also has the fast memcpy in
LGPL then there is no reason why we can not use the code directly. That
way that piece of code stay free as in the GPL without need to relicense
mame. (Which only Nicolai can ofcourse)

PS: I think mame's license is a pain in the ***. I would prefer it to be
GPL'ed with the extra restriction of no roms allowed on same medium and
derivates can not carry the 'mame' name. But thats just my personal wish
ofcourse.

PPS: Nothing is prefenting Nicolai to make the next release of mame a
(windows)binary only release/license so I would prefer a GPL'd mame
anytimes since it would give us a valid excuse... ahem... source to
continue upon if such thing would happen.
