A good place to check is:

http://www.mame.dk/changes/64.phtml

This page tracks changes of MAME and the version of roms
it requires for each release.

For instance, you'll see there's 3 versions of robocop2 floating
around out there. 

As long as the rom you have is listed as  good 
for the  mame version you have, you're in luck.
