that makes for a really interesting idea.

is there any reason to duplicate the full mame tree, when a small xmame
patch could just be installed over the regular mame source? or even
provide the option to download either the full source, or just a small
package to merge with any subsequent releases? not only would this put
less of a burden on Lawrence to pack everything up and release within a
reasonable timeframe from the original, but it'd virtually make his job
minor; as all he'd have to do is accept and check patches, see if new
revisions of mame break anything, and could release updates almost
independently of mame itself.

I know it'd make gentoo ebuilds rather cool, because one could just
download the new mame sources, download the xmame patch, and recompile
with little hassle.
