I've had the same problem since around ALSA 1.0.3, and the workaround I use is to pass -dsp-plugin oss to xmame to force it to use ALSA's OSS emulation. I really need to comb the ALSA mailing list to see if there's any information about this. The strange thing is that xmame doesn't make use of any of the mmap functions directly.
