xmllint --valid uses xmlCtxtReadFile(). I ran it under gdb as
xmllint --valid --noout ACK.R01.xml ACK.R02.xml
when xmlCtxtReadFile() returned in both cases ctxt->valid was 0
I cannot reproduce your problem, with the existing test code and
the current code base.
