I would only add that if you have a need for a case-insensitive XML- like dialect, you could use the HTML parser, which by its nature, is case insensitive, or you could use xmllint with the "--html --xmlout" options to convert from HTML to XHTML (or thereabouts), merging the case of tags as you go. If you aren't really working with HTML, don't pass "--valid" to check against the HTML DTD.
