A number of things may go wrong: did you rebuild libxml2 first ? Or zlib ? And did you install the zlib headers ? Are you sure libxml2 picked the new headers while compiling ? You said you built, that doesn't mean anything about the actual setup, that's why it's nearly random from an support POV. Also you hinted that you may be using RHEL-4, and well I'm not sure such updates are really supported, that should be discussed with your tech contact if you have one. New distros like Fedora have been using this versions with this patch for a year or so without the kind of catastrophic result you're raising, so I'm a bit defensive with your problem, hard to tell where the problem really is, but so far it seems very specific to your setup !
