Paul,
you can use the INTERNET in several ways. The IP protocol is the foundation of
the
INTERNET. On top of that TCP is used most of the time, but UDP may be used as
well.
On top of that there are many choices for 'application layer' protocols.
Popular choices for transferring XML text entities or streams (files,
transactions) are:
SMTP (simple mail transport protocol) (MIME could go with that - there is a MIME
type for
EDI data and probably also for XML),
FTP (file transfer protocol),
HTTP (hyper text transfer protocol).
There are other alternatives, but the above are the most popular and should
suffice. All have their pros
and cons.
I recommend reading the following RFCs (try www.ietf.org and look for the RFC
Editor):
RFC 1865 (EDI Meets the Internet: Frequently asked Questions...)
STD 0003 RFC 1123 (maybe also RFC 1122)
On the IETF website you can also find the IETF Internet EDI workgroup page with
more
information on the subject.
Baseline: both communication parties must use the same protocol, alternatively a
plattform, that can
automatically handle and convert between several protocols can be employed.
Also, to avoid the potential and unpredictable delays on the general public
INTERNET it might
be advisable to think of some ISP with a 'separate' higher quality 'INTERNET
overlay', that
guarantees throughput and delivery times (QOS) (i.e. Concert).
Hope this helps,

Thema: Transportation Standards
Hi all.
I have a question about transporting an XML message. Please forgive me if I
appear to be slightly naive on this subject.
Anyway, If I want to eradicate the use of a VAN (say GE) for example, what are
the requirements that I need to get my message from one application in
Manchester to another application in London for example.
I know the Internet will be used extensively in this, but how? & in what way?.Do
we required a specific ISP?, do we automatically us MIME?.
I need a "BIG picture" on this.
I have looked at what ebXML are doing regarding this matter but it doesn't
explain how?.
Hope someone can clear this matter up for me.
cheers
Paul
