Computer security is like the weather, everybody but no one does
anything about it.
Computer networks are by definition "Unsafe". All communications are
subject to interception and unless they are encrypted with to a
reasonable level (at least 128bit) you might as well use loud speakers
to broadcast you information.
There is no difference between a VAN or the Internet. The information
is passing through a public network with all the 'joys and problems'
that involves.
