Karen,
I don't think so since the UML is a standard being
maintained by the OMG and XML is a Recommendation (standard) developed and
maintained by the W3C.
Remember, that XML is actually a "container." Thus,
it's conceivable that UML models could be contained within such a container,
just like an object could also be contained within it.
There is nothing mutually exclusionary between/among
XML and UML.
However, the OMG has developed the XMI
standard. As reference, I would point you to http://www.sys-con.com/xml/archives/0103/sri_ravi_don/index.html. I quote from this article:
"The
three-legged stool for software development recommended by the Object Management
Group (OMG) consists of the Unified Modeling Language (UML), the Meta Object
Facility (MOF) and the XML Metadata Interchange (XMI)
format."
"In
addition to the API, the MOF rules also define the DTD corresponding to the
metamodel. Any instance data of a metamodel can be represented by an XML
Metadata Interchange (XMI) stream that conforms to the corresponding DTD.
![]() Hope this piques your interest to dig deeper into some
of the info at OMG's site,as well as others.
Rachel
Is there any formal tie between XML and UML?
Is any such relationship formalized in the XML (or UML)
specification?
