m-e-c eagle is an JAVA open source software, which can do both of this.
You have to define the format descriptions of the EDI data and then it can
translate the EDI file to XML (or inversely).

At m-e-c eagle you have SMTP, FTP, HTTP(S), SAP/RFC, PGP/MIME included for
transfer documents.

I was

What you mean with validation/error checking?

You mean syntax check of data (like if there are all mandatory
segments/fields there) or more semantic checks (like if the interchange
numbers are increase...)

Our tool is completely integrated. m-e-c eagle is available at a version RC1
and has already a lot of functionality. Additional functionality (m-e-c
schedule - time scheduler) will be added soon.
