Tony,
I am seeing many organizations also grappling with this
same issue.
My focus is now on the 'end game' phase.
Right now ebXML is in the middle game.
As we approach the end game, many players, RosettaNet,
GCI, OAG, X12 and others are considering how to align and
leverage the ebXML work.
In this context we have launched the GUIDE initiative to
provide the roadmap for industries looking to use XML
for eBusiness in a simple and effective way.
So, GUIDE is working to take all the technical specifications
coming from ebXML and the W3C and provide a consist
and clear roadmap - the 'how to' guide - on getting the
best out of these.
My belief is that the XML/EDI Workshop can definately
perform in this role for Europe.
I would like to propose that the Workshop perform in
this role using the GUIDE initiative as a conduit.
Other things of note in this context. GUIDE provides a
harmonizing format for related work. For instance the
current ISO 8601 on date/time/decimal is a perfect match,
and so we are going to include ISO 8601 as part of GUIDE.
Then the new ISO11179 classification structure is also a
natural for GUIDE, and allows us to harmonize between
ebXML Registry, OASIS Registry, ISO11179 and ebXML.
All this of course is extremely important for Europe, and
having a significant voice into the practical application
of ebXML is I sense the 'endgame' needed here.
Members can participate in GUIDE via the web site:
http://www.xmlguide.org
On the first day we had over 300 downloads and over
50 people join - so the level of interest shows where
the focus now is.
For this Workshop to take a lead in this area would
be an important move for Europe.
Are there issues? Surely - the most immediate need
is to form a non-aligned team to edit, manage,
coordinate the GUIDE work. Part of this will come
from the ebXML side, part of it from industry groups,
and then from individuals who see the need to
deliver on the promise that XML has given us.
We have come a very long way in a short time.
Now is NOT the time to quit - but to focus and deliver!
Thanks, DW.
