Subject: RE: Business Internet
Consortium
Lola,
I totally agree with
you.
Though these
initiatives go to the right direction, the challenge is to
- create a long-term
infrastructure, based on a vision of the technological future, to endure
stability of the model
- and still deliver
results quickly to have enough interested parties and reach critical
mass.
It is a hard dilemma:
where to allocate resources.
This comes from my
very own experience: I am trying to integrate XML in a platform we are
developing for the chemical industry.
The technological
integration is not an issue: XML, XSL, XSLT... Programmers know how to handle
it.
But the difficulty is
to find content, or even to choose the right technology option (CSS versus
XSL, for instance).
I have been looking
for standards that are commonly accepted for various data.
A very simple example:
how should I define a phone number? how many digits? all in one field, or
separate fields for country code, area code, local number? I am sure that
standards exist. If not, how would the international operator handle
phone calls from , say, Afghanistan to Romania?
But where can I find
such a convention? If someone has an answer, please tell
us.
This was a
simple example. What about data description for a ship full of chemical
products, going from Singapore to Korea. How do I ensure that my data
definition will, one fine day, be easily understood by a user, or by a
shipping company?
I heard the theory
(DTD, schema); this is great.
But how do I address
the issue in practice, to write my program?
This is a question
that should not be left in the background.
Any comments,
help?
Thanks
Best regards,

There are several "open" consortiums in
the works that attempt to provide a
wide exchange of information and
technology criteria in regards to e-Business
initiatives. My experience
has been that the concepts are more easily
imagined that the actual
implementation that it takes to move these processes
forward. One
area of crucial leverage is the education in functional
processes, which
is key in driving the momentum when contemplating this "time
to market"
arena. Your thoughts?
