Saravanan,
When you get right down to it, whatever one system is
sending, the other has to be able to receive. Or you
need an interim translator to do a conversion.
Unfortunately, this reduces the available options to
the lowest common denominator.
EDI and XML are both widely accepted standards, and a
company called Vignette even provides a freeware
component called XML-Connect, which will allow anyone
with a PC and an internet connection to receive XML
documents ... where Vignette makes is money is in the
EAI component to connect the XML to your back-end
systems (if any are available). Something will have to
open the XML up once received, and do something with
it. Tibco, TSI, Extricity, and WebMethods have similar
offerings (to name a few, for others, lookup EAI).
I've found that some brick-and-mortars don't even own
computers. They will require some hosted ASP solution
to support their transaction processing and/or catalog
presentation. My company, Metiom, does just that. As
does Ariba and CommerceOne.
I hope this helps. Fell free to contact me if you
have any more questions.
