I fully believe everyone's intent here with XML is that this occur and that 
we begin to see a real shift toward getting the SMEs on board.  I fully 
agree with this intent and I don't judge that anyone has wrongful intent 
here.

But what I see is that most have misjudged the underlying BIG problem in 
EDI and we are now then going through a major paradigm shift from X12 to 
XML without having solved (or even been aware) of the cause of this major 
problem in EDI.

I am no "EDI only" bigot and would LOVE to scrap EDI for the next better 
model.  We certainly need to move to a better model beyond EDI.  I just 
don't see that XML/edi supplies that model.  It will still require 
programmer mapping, maintenance and support just as X12 does and thus be an 
expense that will crowd out the SMEs.
