The Gentran Director is a standalone package. It has an optional mapper. It
you want to keep the price down, you can buy pre-compiled templates for
around $200. It does run on a network. The price is not anywhere near
$40K. The Gentran NT server version of the software is probably the
software you are thinking of. The Genrtan NT workstation version is in the
$15K range, I believe. It does come with a mapper. The Gentran Director
without mapping capability is priced even lower. It can do everything
anyone needs to translate EDI to flat file or to use screen entry and print
forms for non integrated systems. You get a lot of capability for the price
and you can easily move up to more powerful platforms as your business
grows.
I believe they are currently working on a migration path up to the UNIX
based product. If your business grows beyond the NT capability, you will be
able to move up to a UNIX machine.
If you are in a growing business and want to be able to move up to more
powerful platforms as your volume expands, I believe the Gentran line of
products are the best way to go. You can use the maps and move painlessly
from platform to platform withut having to remap all your transactions. If
you think about where most of your money goes, it is into the mapping.
Being able to move up and save all the mapping cost, is, IMHO, a great
advantage.
