Yes, agreements are still important. See

Up to my knowledge, before trading partners start exchanging EDI
message, the should agree upon certain parameters in what is called an
"Interchange Agreement". My questions are :
1. Is it still applicable for exchanging XML documents.
2. Is there any standard (or a recommended) model for interchange
agreement .
