Hello Elizabeth,
Many of our customers have researched this same question, so I thought I
would pass on to you what many of them have discovered and told us. A VAN
sponsored Web solution can support not only your EDI transactions, but also
the transactions of other trading partners that your suppliers may be
dealing with. Thus, a single entry point allows small companies to trade
with multiple customers. Softshare's Web based Athena solution
http://athena.softshare.com/ for example, allows users to trade with any
trading partner that sends either X12, EDIFACT or XML based transactions.
Having one URL and one interface really helps improve the learning curve for
smaller vendors who may not have very high volume.
Generally speaking a VAN sponsored solution can also be implemented in a
shorter time frame, although this may depend upon the VAN and your specific
requirements. One last benefit of VAN sponsored Web EDI is more for you.
If you develop your own internal solution you will also need to support it.
VAN-based solutions are (or at least should be) supported by the VAN.
Good luck in your search for the right solution and feel free to visit
Athena and log in using the guest account if you would like to find out
more.

Subject: Web-based Forms
Is anyone using online Purchase Order/Invoice Forms to trade EDI documents
with
their non-EDI Customers? What are the advantages to using VAN sponsored web
forms such as GEIS, or even Peregrine, compared to developing an internal
web-based frontend that the non-EDI trading partners could interact with via
their web broswer?
Thank you in advance for your response,
Elizabeth Shniper
