Introduction to UN/EDIFACT: (First Day) This seminar introduces the use of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) standard called EDI for Administration, Commerce and Transport (EDIFACT) to exchange international trade documents among countries more accurately and much faster. The following topics will be discussed: a simple document flow from sending an order (ORDERS), to receiving an invoice (INVOIC), and making payment (REMADV); the different methods of exchanging electronic data (VAN, Internet, Direct Connect); terms commonly used in EDIFACT; the architecture of an EDIFACT message (or trade document), its components and implementation rules; acknowledgment (CONTRL); and, trading partner agreement. Pre-requisite: A basic knowledge of EDI. Number of Hours: 8. (See below for dates and hotel information.) *********************************************** Implementing UN/EDIFACT: (Second Day) If possible, participant should bring a notebook computer to install and become familiar with EDIFACT software.Hands-on experience in using the various common messages of the EDIFACT standard, including Purchase Order, Invoice, Acknowledgement and making payment messages. Various additional messages will be used such as delivery schedule (DELFOR), despatch advice (DESADV), purchase order change (ORDCHG), purchase order response (ORDRSP), etc. The purpose of the 2nd day of this seminar is to allow participants to work on practical case studies. XML:
This course is designed for the implementation of XML in at least three areas: as a superset of HTML, as an alternative or augmentation to EDI, and as an option for inter- and intra-application document or file exchanges. Participants are required to complete case studies of various XML applications in these areas and to examine and compare legacy and next-generation systems, as well as explore various options for exchanging documents and files. Other topics include basics of EBNF, HTML and EDI; the components of XML; how to create and validate XML using DTD and Schema; presenting XML utilizing CSS and XSL; formalizing XML; the use and roles of parsers, editors, translators, and stylesheet processors and APIs (DOM and SAX); integrating XML applications with various applications and EC systems; the use of XPath, XSLT, XPointer, XLink, XQuery, etc.; short-term and long-term issues in XML implementations; and XML resources. Sample projects: Commerce One, Ariba and others. Pre-requisite: Basic knowledge of SGML or HTML or EDI, or consent of instructor. Number of Hours: 24. Implementing XML, XSL, and
XSLT:
Case studies and "hands-on" exercises focus on:
utilizing XSL, XSLT, XPath, MSXML parser, Internet browser and other software,
transform XML documents into other XML documents, HTML, text and other formats;
demonstrate the use of Extensible Stylesheet Language Formatting Objects (XSLFO)
for the paginated presentation of structured information (e.g. printing XML);
discuss client versus server transformations; and, possible implications of the
ebXML registry initiative utilizing SOAP. The objectives of the course are: to
understand the role and utility of the W3C Recommendation; to overview basic
constructs of the W3C Recommendation; to design and develop XSLFO scripts using
XSLT and XPath; and to efficiently navigate the available documentation and
resources. Pre-requisite: Implementing XML. Number of Hours: 16. .

Case studies and "hands-on" exercises focus on: comparing DTDs and Schemas; primitive and derived datatyping; developing schema structures; where applicable utilize namespaces, qualifications, redefined types and groups, substitution groups, abstracts elements and types, specifying uniqueness, etc.; a review of W3C versus Microsoft's Schema implementations; and, possible implications of the ebXML registry initiative utilizing SOAP.
