Can anyone help me find information on simple machine-to-machine transport
of XML documents?  I thought there was a mechanism that used HTML ports.

Greg,

You can use simple tcp/ip POST as well between two points on a network.

XML can be moved just like HTML if you do not care about more 
sophisticated synchronization - such as SOAP (see Apache server site).
