Yes! After you do that (after you remove what you have done so far in the CSS and in the .xxe file), just follow the instructions found here: http://www.xmlmind.com/xmleditor/_distrib/doc/configure/cals_table.html This works fine even for the most complex CALS tables and this has been used for CALS tables found in the DITA DTD (that is, a problem very similar to yours).
