I'll switch to Unbuntu on my next Linux box. For now, I cannot reproduce this problem on SuSE Linux 9.3/Gnome 2.10 (Java 1.4.2_10 or Java 1.6 beta2). The reason may be the fact that, in your environment, XXE's DocumentPane does not use the same font as JTextFields (don't ask me why!).
