The "Character Tool" will be displayed if you click on its tab. Its tab (found at the very right of the main window) contains an icon looking like this: "???". Note that with XXE, there is no way to enter a character *entity*. You can just enter characters: the copyright character and PI character are not treated differently from 'a' or 'Z'. Now if you choose to save your documents using the US-ASCII character set for example, as configured by default, XXE will automatically save these characters as "©" et as "π". See http://www.xmlmind.com/xmleditor/_distrib/doc/help/com.xmlmind.xmleditapp.dialog.PreferencesEditorDialog.html#saveOptions --- PS: There is an alternate user interface for inserting special characters. This alternate user interface allows you to specify a character by its entity name (supports auto-completion) but just like the character tool, this other tool insert characters, and not character entities. If you want to use this, use "Options|Install Add-ons", install the add-on called "A sample customize.xxe", restart XXE. Then type Esc followed by Shift-C to insert a special character by name.
