OK. I've found I can use dita.setConref [unset] as a test for transcluded content, and use my new unsetOrResetConref command to easily toggle transclusion off and back on again as an intro/outro to manipulating the source element.

No. If you don't like how XXE transcludes conrefs, simply remove: --- <include location="conref.incl" /> --- from DITA_addon_dir/dita_common.incl and DITA_addon_dir/dita_map_common.incl.
