After installing Xgl and compiz (fancy new window manager) on my Linux box (Mandriva cooker), XXE started with a blank window.
It appears there is a known incompatibility between Xgl and Java 1.5 with swing applications. The resolution: Set an environment variable AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit before starting these application. I added this line to my ~/.bashrc to take care of all swing applications: export AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit Kind regards Peter Ring
