After some testing, I realize that this problem is largely my own fault.
I had used the Page Setup dialog to set the print margins to one (small)
size, and then used a larger size margin in the actual Print dialog.
When I set both to the same value, this behavior no longer occurs.

Somewhat tangentially, I think Java 1.5 prints better than 1.4, but that
is besides the point.
